How it is calculated
Approximate litres = area × (tile length + width) / (length × width) × joint width × depth, using tile and joint dimensions in mm. Weight = litres × density × allowance factor.
Worked example
For 10 m² of 200 × 200 mm tiles with 3 mm joints and 5 mm joint depth, geometric volume is about 1.5 L. At 1.6 kg/L, this is 2.4 kg before allowance.
Before you calculate
Use the actual effective joint depth and width, not automatically the full tile thickness. Obtain the relevant mixed-product density from the manufacturer. Enter a waste allowance separately and keep its purpose clear.
Interpreting the result
The expression approximates a regular joint network and can differ from product consumption tables. Tile profile, packing and application losses matter. Compare the result with the chosen grout's guidance and batch requirements before buying.
