How it is calculated
Yield (%) = usable weight / purchased weight × 100. Waste (%) = 100 − yield. Cost per usable kg = purchase cost / usable kg.
Worked example
Buying 2 kg for EUR 8 and retaining 1.5 kg after trimming gives 75% yield, 25% waste and approximately EUR 5.33 per usable kilogram.
Before you calculate
Weigh comparable purchased and usable portions of the same ingredient. This tool describes preparation losses such as peeling or trimming. Include the purchase cost once; do not add the discarded portion's cost again after dividing by usable weight.
Interpreting the result
Usable weight cannot exceed purchased weight in this trimming model. Cooking with water absorption needs the separate cooked-recipe yield calculator. The calculation does not assess food safety, nutritional value or storage life.
Use the units shown beside each field. Monetary fields labelled EUR stay in euros; changing language does not exchange currencies. Results are estimates under the stated assumptions.
